Tatonka is a family-run business that evolved from the climbing and mountain sports company Mountain Sport GmbH.

Unlike many competitors, Tatonka owns and operates its own production facilities in Vietnam through its subsidiary, Mountech Co. Ltd. Since 2011, the company has operated the 'Open Factory' program, allowing consumers and visitors to inspect the manufacturing facility in Ho Chi Minh City on a weekly basis to see the working conditions and social standards firsthand. The factory is SA8000 certified, ensuring ethical labor practices.

Today, Tatonka remains under the ownership of the original founding family (the Schechinger family).
