Systembolaget, often simply called 'Systemet', is the government-owned chain of liquor stores in Sweden. It is the only retail store allowed to sell alcoholic beverages containing more than 3.5% alcohol by volume. Founded as a unified state monopoly in 1955, its primary purpose is to limit the health-related problems caused by alcohol by selling without a profit motive or incentives for upselling.
The organization is owned entirely by the Swedish state under the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. While it does not manufacture its own products, it acts as the primary distributor for thousands of domestic and international alcohol brands. The company maintains strict neutrality between brands and operates one of the most sophisticated supply chain and laboratory testing systems for beverages in the world.
