Bruno is a next-generation, open-source API client designed to challenge established tools like Postman and Insomnia. It was originally created by Anoop M D to provide a faster and lighter alternative for developers who prioritize git-sync and local data storage. Unlike many modern API tools that force cloud synchronization, Bruno stores your collections directly on your filesystem in a proprietary markup language called Bru, allowing for seamless integration with version control systems.
The development of the brand traces its roots to India, where the project was initiated. It has since grown into a global community-driven software project. Because it is open-source, the 'manufacturing' or coding occurs globally through contributions from developers worldwide, though official releases and architectural direction are managed by the core team.
Ownership remains largely tied to its original creator and the open-source community under the MIT License. This ensures that the brand remains accessible and transparent, catering specifically to the needs of modern engineering teams who require privacy and offline-first workflows.
