Pez is an iconic confectionery brand known for its unique mechanical dispensers and small, rectangular sugar candies. The brand was originally invented in Vienna, Austria, in 1927 by Eduard Haas III. The name 'Pez' is an abbreviation of the German word for peppermint, 'Pfefferminz', which was the original and only flavor offered at the time. Initially marketed as a luxury peppermint breath mint for adults, the brand eventually shifted its focus toward children in the 1950s by introducing character-themed dispensers and fruit flavors.
Today, the brand maintains a dual manufacturing presence to serve different global markets. The European and international markets are largely supplied by production facilities in Austria and Hungary, while the North American market is served by a dedicated manufacturing plant in Orange, Connecticut. Despite its global reach, Pez remains a privately held family business, overseen by the Haas family through Pez Holding GmbH.
