Nautica is a prominent American lifestyle brand founded in 1983 by designer David Chu. Originally launched with a collection of six outerwear styles, the brand quickly became a global symbol of maritime-inspired fashion, blending functional sportswear with a classic aesthetic. Over the decades, Nautica expanded from men's apparel into women's wear, children's clothing, accessories, and home goods, maintaining its signature nautical theme characterized by sails, stripes, and ocean tones.
In terms of manufacturing, Nautica products are produced globally through a network of contract manufacturers. Production primarily takes place in countries with large textile industries, such as Vietnam, China, India, and Bangladesh, ensuring high-volume distribution for its international markets. This diversified supply chain allows the brand to maintain accessibility while delivering its classic styling across various price points.
The brand's ownership has changed hands through significant corporate acquisitions. In 2003, it was acquired by VF Corporation, a major American apparel and footwear company. However, in 2018, VF Corporation sold Nautica to Authentic Brands Group (ABG). As of 2026, the brand continues to operate under the ownership of ABG, which specializes in brand development and licensing, while its manufacturing and distribution are managed through various global partners.
