Founded in Berlin in 1979 by Peter Tschimmel, the brand initially specialized in DIY speaker kits before evolving into a leading direct-to-consumer audio powerhouse.

While the engineering, design, and acoustic research for products like the Cinebar soundbar series take place at Teufel's headquarters in Berlin, the mass manufacturing of the hardware is primarily outsourced to specialized production facilities in China to maintain competitive pricing. This hybrid model allows the brand to maintain German engineering standards while leveraging global manufacturing efficiency.

Ownership of the brand has changed hands through private equity firms over the decades. Since 2018, the ultimate owner has been the French investment firm Ardian, which acquired Teufel from the HgCapital group. The company continues to operate as an independent entity under the Ardian portfolio, focusing on the European market through its direct sales model.
