Porto Alegre is a traditional Brazilian dairy brand originating from the interior of Minas Gerais, a state famous for its high-quality milk production. The brand was founded in 1991 in the city of Mutum and later established major manufacturing operations in Ponte Nova. It has become one of the most recognized dairy producers in the region, specializing in cheeses, Dulce de leche, and the classic Brazilian creamy spread known as 'Requeijão'.

In 2017, the Swiss dairy giant Emmi Group acquired a significant stake in Laticínios Porto Alegre, eventually taking a majority controlling interest. This partnership allowed Porto Alegre to expand its industrial capacity and technological reach while maintaining its regional identity. Today, the brand is part of Emmi's global portfolio, though it remains deeply rooted in the Minas Gerais dairy tradition with local production facilities.
