Hobgoblin is one of the most recognizable and successful English ale brands, famous for its distinct branding and 'Legendary Ruby Beer.' It was originally created by Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire, which became famous for its character-led labeling and dark, flavorful malts. The brand played a pivotal role in the British real ale revival by marketing to a younger, more alternative audience compared to traditional bitters.
Over the decades, the ownership of Hobgoblin has shifted as the British brewing industry consolidated. Wychwood was acquired by Marston's PLC, which helped take the brand to international markets. In a more recent strategic shift, Marston's formed a joint venture with the Danish brewing giant Carlsberg Group. In 2024 and looking toward 2026, the brand is fully integrated into the Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company portfolio, with Carlsberg eventually moving to acquire full ownership of the joint venture to solidify its footprint in the UK market.
While the historic Wychwood Brewery site in Witney was closed in 2023, production of Hobgoblin continues within the larger brewery network owned by the group, primarily at the Park Brewery in Wolverhampton. This ensures that the heritage of the Oxfordshire-born ale remains available to consumers worldwide under the stewardship of one of the world's largest beverage companies.
