The brand was established in 1934 by Sir James Wattie in Hastings, Hawke's Bay, an area famous for its fertile orchards. These peaches are typically sourced from local New Zealand growers and processed in the Hastings manufacturing plant to preserve their natural flavor and texture.

Over the decades, Wattie's grew from a local fruit and vegetable canning operation into New Zealand's largest food producer. In 1992, the company was acquired by the American multinational H.J. Heinz Company. Following the subsequent merger of Heinz and Kraft, the brand is currently under the portfolio of The Kraft Heinz Company. Despite its international ownership, Wattie's remains a symbol of New Zealand's agricultural industry, maintaining a strong manufacturing presence in the country.
