The Tengelmann brand traces its roots back to 1867 when Wilhelm Schmitz and Louise Scholl founded the trading firm Wilh. Schmitz-Scholl in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. Originally focused on colonial goods like coffee and tea, the family opened their first retail store in 1893 under the name 'Tengelmann'—named after a long-time employee to preserve the family's social standing at the time. Over the next century, it evolved into one of the world's most significant retail and distribution groups.
Throughout the 20th century, Tengelmann expanded its footprint significantly, introducing the self-service supermarket concept to Germany in the 1950s and acquiring major rivals like Kaiser's. While the company eventually transitioned from operating its own namesake supermarkets (selling many to Edeka and REWE), it remains a powerful holding company with diverse interests in retail, e-commerce, and specialized production. Historically, the brand was also synonymous with high-quality private-label confectionery and coffee produced at its own regional plants.
Ownership has remained within the founding Scholl/Haub family for generations. Today, the Tengelmann Group functions as a strategic holding company overseeing a vast portfolio of retail brands and investments, maintaining its headquarters in Germany.
