Alpro is the leading European pioneer in plant-based food and drinks, best known for its soy, almond, and oat alternatives. Founded in Belgium in 1980, the brand was established with the vision of creating healthy, sustainable food options that are kinder to the planet. Since its inception, Alpro has championed the plant-based movement, evolving from a niche health brand into a mainstream household name across Europe and beyond.
Over the decades, the brand underwent significant ownership changes, eventually becoming part of WhiteWave Foods. In 2017, the global dairy giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods in a multi-billion dollar deal, integrating Alpro into its Essential Dairy and Plant-Based (EDP) division. Today, Danone continues to drive the brand's growth, aligning it with global sustainability goals and expanding its product range to include various textures and flavors, such as the Greek Style alternatives.
While Alpro was born in Wevelgem, Belgium—where it still maintains major production facilities—its manufacturing network is now international to meet high demand. Primary production sites are located in Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France. The brand remains a cornerstone of Danone's strategy to lead the flexitarian market, emphasizing high protein content and low environmental impact in its manufacturing processes.
