Tetley Tea Bags

Tetley is one of the most iconic tea brands in the world, with a heritage dating back to 1837 when brothers Joseph and Edward Tetley started selling tea in Yorkshire, England. The brand is credited with several innovations in the tea industry, most notably being the first to introduce tea bags to the United Kingdom in 1953, which fundamentally changed how the nation consumed its favorite beverage.

While the brand maintains deep British roots, its manufacturing and sourcing are global in nature. Much of the tea for the UK market is processed at the Tetley manufacturing facility in Eaglescliffe, Teesside, which is one of the largest tea production plants in the world. However, as a global brand, production and packaging also take place in other regions to serve international markets. The tea leaves themselves are sourced from plantations across the world, primarily in Africa and India, through Rainforest Alliance Certified gardens.

In 2000, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by the Indian conglomerate Tata Group. Today, it operates under Tata Consumer Products, a global fast-moving consumer goods company. This acquisition represented one of the largest takeovers of a foreign brand by an Indian company at the time, uniting one of Britain's most loved brands with one of the world's largest tea producers.
