Trader Joe's is a unique American grocery chain known for its private-label products and neighborhood store atmosphere. Founded by Joe Coulombe in 1967 in Pasadena, California, the brand initially differentiated itself by offering hard-to-find international foods and domestic gourmet items at competitive prices.

The products sold under the Trader Joe's brand are manufactured globally by a vast network of third-party suppliers. While many staples are produced in the United States, specialty items are often sourced from their country of origin—such as pasta from Italy, wine from France, or frozen delicacies from Asia—to maintain authenticity.

Ownership of the company changed in 1979 when it was acquired by the German Theo Albrecht, one of the founders of the Aldi supermarket empire. Today, Trader Joe's is owned by ALDI NORD, a massive global retail group based in Germany. Despite its foreign ownership, Trader Joe's operates independently of the US-based Aldi South (Aldi Sud) stores, maintaining its distinct branding and cult-favorite product lineup.
