Channel 4 is a leading British public-service free-to-air television network. Unlike most public broadcasters, it receives no public funding and is instead funded entirely by its own commercial activities, primarily through television advertising and digital revenue. Since its launch, the channel has been committed to providing alternative programming that reflects the diversity of the United Kingdom and supports the independent production sector.

The brand originated in the early 1980s following an Act of Parliament intended to create a fourth television service to provide competition for the BBC and ITV. Its production model is unique as it does not produce its own programs in-house; instead, it commissions content from independent production companies across the UK, effectively stimulating the domestic creative economy.

While Channel 4 is commercially self-sufficient, it remains a statutory corporation and is ultimately owned by the UK government through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Despite various discussions regarding privatization over the years, the network persists as a public asset with a specific mandate to deliver innovative and distinctive content to the British public.
