The brand's heritage dates back to the 19th century when Henry Tate and Abram Lyle founded their respective sugar refineries, eventually merging in 1921 to form Tate & Lyle PLC. This specific icing sugar is produced from cane sugar and is processed in the United Kingdom, maintaining a long-standing tradition of British sugar refining.

While the brand carries a deep British legacy and holds a Royal Warrant, its ownership transitioned in 2010. The European sugar refining business, including the consumer-facing Tate + Lyle brand name, was sold by the original parent company (Tate & Lyle PLC) to American Sugar Refining, Inc. (ASR Group). Consequently, while the sugar is still made using British manufacturing facilities like the Thames Refinery in London, the brand is now owned by an American multinational corporation.
