Propecia is a well-known pharmaceutical brand used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Its active ingredient, finasteride, works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is primarily responsible for the shrinking of hair follicles. Originally developed as a treatment for prostate enlargement, the lower dose version (1 mg) was eventually approved for dermatological use.
The brand was originally developed and launched by the American pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. (known as MSD outside the United States and Canada). However, in June 2021, Merck completed a spinoff of several of its legacy brands, including those in women's health and dermatology, to a new independent company called Organon. Consequently, Propecia is now owned and managed by Organon. The manufacturing of Propecia occurs in various global facilities owned or contracted by Organon, often based on the specific requirements of regional markets such as Europe or North America.
