Kingston Technology is a global leader in the computer storage and memory industry. Founded in 1987 by John Tu and David Sun in Fountain Valley, California, the company was born out of a need to resolve a shortage of surface-mount memory chips using available components. Although the founders briefly sold an 80% stake to SoftBank in 1996, they famously repurchased it in 1999, returning the company to private, founder-led status.

As of 2026, Kingston remains a privately held American corporation, with John Tu and David Sun serving as the ultimate owners. The company operates a vast global supply chain with manufacturing and assembly facilities located in Taiwan, China, and the United States, along with logistics hubs in Ireland and the United Kingdom. While it sold its HyperX gaming peripherals division to HP Inc. in 2021, Kingston retains its core memory and storage business, including the Kingston FURY performance line and DataTraveler USB products.
