The brand was originally created by the Ota company in Nakskov, Denmark, in 1898. For many years, the brand was owned and managed by Quaker Oats, which expanded its presence across Scandinavia.

In recent years, the ownership of Ota Solgryn transitioned to the Danish food company Crispy Food, based in Gørlev. This return to Danish ownership was celebrated as a homecoming for the brand. The manufacturing primarily takes place in Denmark, ensuring the product maintains its historical connection to the region while operating under the umbrella of a local food industry leader.
