Southern Phone is an Australian telecommunications provider that has historically focused on serving regional and rural communities. Founded in 2002, the company was initially unique because it was owned by several regional local government councils across Australia, with dividends returned to those communities.
In late 2019, the ownership structure underwent a significant change when the regional councils voted to sell the business. It was acquired by AGL Energy, one of Australia's largest energy companies. This acquisition allowed AGL to become a multi-service provider, bundling electricity and gas services with telecommunications products like mobile plans and home internet. Southern Phone continues to operate under its original brand and utilizes major Australian carrier networks, such as Telstra and Optus, to deliver its services to customers nationwide.
