Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders, is a world-renowned emergency medical humanitarian organization. Founded in 1971 by a group of French doctors and journalists, it was created following the Biafra secession in Nigeria with the goal of providing medical aid where it is needed most, independent of political, religious, or economic interests.
The organization operates as a global movement with various operational centers and offices worldwide. It provides medical assistance in more than 70 countries to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. As a non-governmental organization (NGO), MSF is not a commercial product; its 'output' is life-saving medical care, surgical intervention, and psychological support delivered directly in crisis zones.
The headquarters for the international movement is located in Geneva, Switzerland. MSF is governed by its own members and is primarily funded by private donations, ensuring its independence and impartiality. Its work was globally recognized in 1999 when the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
