Telenet is a leading provider of media and telecommunication services in Belgium, primarily serving the Flanders and Brussels regions. Founded in 1996, it was initially a project supported by the Flemish government to build a high-speed cable network. Over decades, it evolved from a regional cable company into a comprehensive digital service provider offering high-speed internet, digital television, fixed-line telephony, and mobile services.
Since 2005, the company has been under the significant influence of American media giant Liberty Global. Telenet's operations are deeply rooted in Belgian infrastructure, utilizing a widespread HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial) network to deliver services to millions of households. While it operates domestically, its technological advancements and corporate strategy are heavily integrated with its international parent organization.
In recent years, Telenet has expanded its footprint through the acquisition of mobile operators like BASE and through partnerships that allow it to offer services across all of Belgium. As of 2023, Liberty Global successfully completed a takeover bid to delist the company from the stock exchange, bringing Telenet under full private ownership within the Liberty Global portfolio.
