Penaten is one of the most iconic skin care brands in Germany, deeply rooted in the history of baby health. It was founded in 1904 by Max Riese, a pharmacist in Rhöndorf, who invented the famous 'Penaten Creme' in an unmistakable blue tin. The name was inspired by the Penates, the ancient Roman household deities tasked with protection.
Over the decades, the brand expanded from its signature cream to a full range of dermatologically tested baby care products including oils, lotions, and bath products. While once synonymous with German production, manufacturing has been modernized across several European sites to meet international demand. In recent years, the brand transitioned through a major corporate spin-off; it is now part of the global consumer health portfolio of Kenvue, ensuring its legacy of skin protection continues under a dedicated healthcare corporation.
