Founded in 2007 in Nelson, New Zealand, the brand prides itself on using only natural ingredients and traditional hand-cooking methods. The 'Marlborough Sea Salt' variety prominently features salt sourced from Lake Grassmere in the Marlborough region of New Zealand.

While the brand's heritage is deeply rooted in New Zealand, its growing popularity in Australia led to the establishment of local manufacturing. In 2021, Proper Crisps opened an Australian manufacturing facility in Yandina, Queensland, to serve the Australian market more efficiently using locally sourced Australian potatoes.

The brand remained under private ownership for many years before being acquired by The Griffin's Food Company in 2022. Griffin's, a historic New Zealand food business, is itself a subsidiary of the global conglomerate Inghams Group (specifically owned by Universal Robina Corporation), though operations continue to maintain the boutique brand identity of Proper Crisps.
