Egunkaria was a landmark publication in the history of Basque culture, launched in December 1990 as the first daily newspaper written entirely in Euskara (the Basque language). The brand emerged from a grassroots movement and group of cultural activists who sought to create a national, independent, and non-partisan media outlet for Basque speakers. Its creation was a critical step in the normalization and promotion of the Basque language in written media.
In 2003, the newspaper was controversially shut down by Spanish judicial authorities under allegations of links to a separatist group. These charges were eventually overturned in 2010 when a Spanish criminal court ruled that there was no legal basis for the closure and acquitted the paper's directors of all charges. Following the closure, the local community and former staff quickly mobilized to establish Berria, which serves as the spiritual and functional successor to the Egunkaria brand, continuing the tradition of daily Basque-only journalism.
