Gara Newspaper

Gara (Basque for 'We are') is a bilingual daily newspaper published in the city of San Sebastián, in the Basque Country. It was founded in 1999 as a successor to the shut-down daily 'Egin', aiming to serve as a pluralistic and independent voice for the Basque-speaking and pro-independence community. The publication primarily utilizes Basque and Spanish languages to cover local, national, and international news.

The newspaper is owned and managed by the company Baigorri Argitaletxea SA. Its creation was supported by a massive popular subscription campaign to recover the media presence of the Basque left after the judicial closure of its predecessor. Despite facing significant legal and financial challenges over the decades, Gara remains a significant cultural and political fixture in the Euskal Herria region.
