Chiko Roll

The Chiko Roll is a quintessential Australian snack, first conceptualized by Frank McEncroe and debuted at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Show in 1951. Designed as a rugged, one-handed deep-fried snack that could withstand the rigors of football matches, it was inspired by the Chinese spring roll but adapted with a much thicker, doughier pastry and a hearty filling of cabbage, barley, carrots, and beef.

Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Australia, specifically at facilities in Bathurst, New South Wales. While the brand has changed hands several times in its history, evolving from a local invention to a national icon, it remains a staple of Australian takeaway culture and surf clubs.

Since the mid-1990s, the Chiko brand has been under the ownership of the American multinational food processor J.R. Simplot Company. Despite its international ownership, the production and marketing remain deeply rooted in Australia through Simplot's local subsidiary, ensuring that its identity as a classic 'Aussie' icon is preserved for modern consumers.
