IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) is a global technology pioneer with a history dating back to the late 19th century. The company was officially incorporated on June 16, 1911, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) through the merger of four established businesses: the Bundy Manufacturing Company, the Tabulating Machine Company, the International Time Recording Company, and the Computing Scale Company of America. Under the leadership of Thomas J. Watson, CTR was rebranded as International Business Machines in 1924, reflecting its growing global footprint and diversified product line, which included everything from meat slicers to punch-card tabulators.

Throughout the 20th century, IBM dominated the computing industry, particularly with its System/360 mainframes and later the IBM PC, which set the architecture standard for personal computing. Today, IBM has transitioned from traditional hardware manufacturing to a high-margin business model centered on Hybrid Cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Consulting. While it historically maintained massive manufacturing plants in the United States (such as in Endicott, Poughkeepsie, and Boca Raton), its modern infrastructure and hardware components are produced across a global supply chain, with significant research and development facilities located in over a dozen countries.

IBM is a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. As of 2026, it remains an independent entity with a highly distributed ownership structure. Its largest shareholders are major institutional investors and passive index funds, such as The Vanguard Group and BlackRock. This structure ensures that IBM operates as a widely-held corporation led by a professional board of directors and executive management, rather than a single controlling family or parent organization.
