Green Giant is an iconic brand of frozen and canned vegetables that has been a staple in North American kitchens for over a century. The brand's origin dates back to the Minnesota Valley Canning Company, founded in 1903. The famous 'Jolly Green Giant' mascot was introduced in the late 1920s to market a particularly large variety of pea, eventually becoming the namesake of the entire company in 1950.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major food conglomerates. In 1979, Green Giant merged with the Pillsbury Company, which was later acquired by General Mills in 2001. In a strategic shift, General Mills sold the Green Giant brand to B&G Foods in 2015.
Today, while the brand is owned by the American company B&G Foods, there are complex regional licensing agreements. Specifically in Canada and certain international markets, General Mills continues to manufacture or distribute these products under license. Most of the produce is sourced and canned in the United States, particularly across the Midwest, though supply chains can involve multiple international locations depending on the specific vegetable and seasonal availability.
