Founded in 1973 in Toronto, Canada, Roots has evolved from a small shoe store into an iconic global lifestyle brand. Originally established by Michael Budman and Don Green, who were inspired by the natural beauty of Algonquin Park, the brand became famous for its 'Negative Heel' shoes and eventually its cozy, high-quality fleece sweats and leather goods.
While the brand maintains a strong identity rooted in Canadian heritage, its manufacturing processes are distributed globally. While some leather goods are still crafted in their state-of-the-art tannery in Canada, much of their apparel, including hoodies and sweatshirts, is produced in multiple countries to leverage international manufacturing expertise.
In 2015, the brand transitioned to a new ownership structure when Searchlight Capital Partners acquired a majority stake. This move was intended to fuel international expansion while preserving the brand's authentic Canadian essence. Today, Roots remains a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker 'ROOT,' maintaining its headquarters and design operations in Toronto.
