Birra Ichnusa is an iconic Sardinian lager with roots dating back to 1912. It was originally founded in Cagliari, Sardinia, by Amsicora Capra, a wine producer who turned to brewing during a regional wine crisis. The name 'Ichnusa' is derived from the ancient Greek word for the island of Sardinia, meaning 'footprint,' which references the island's unique shape. The brand is deeply tied to Sardinian identity, famously featuring the 'Four Moors' flag on its labeling.

While the brand maintains its historical and cultural heart in Sardinia, its ownership changed significantly in the late 20th century. In 1986, the Dutch multinational beverage company Heineken N.V. acquired Birra Ichnusa. Despite this acquisition, production remains centered at the Heineken-owned brewery in Assemini, near Cagliari, ensuring that it continues to be brewed on the island. Today, it stands as one of Italy's most popular regional beers, moving beyond the island to become a staple across mainland Italy and international markets.
