Freixenet is one of the world's most recognized producers of sparkling wine, specifically Cava. The brand's history dates back to 1861 when Francesc Sala Ferrés founded Casa Sala, but it was in 1911 that the brand 'Freixenet' was truly born following the marriage of Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolores Sala Vivé. Based in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain, the brand rose to global prominence with its iconic matte black bottle, known as Cordon Negro.
In 2018, the German sparkling wine giant Henkell (a subsidiary of the Oetker Group) acquired a 50.7% stake in the company, forming the Henkell Freixenet group. This merger created the world's leading sparkling wine group, combining German expertise in Sekt with the Spanish heritage of Cava and international Prosecco production. The brand continues to emphasize its Mediterranean roots while operating under a global corporate umbrella.
