Chimay is a prestigious Belgian Trappist beer brewed within the walls of Scourmont Abbey in Chimay, Belgium. The brewing tradition at the abbey dates back to 1862, established by the Cistercian Trappist monks with the goal of supporting their community and funding charitable works. To this day, the brewery remains one of the few in the world authorized to use the 'Authentic Trappist Product' logo, ensuring that the beer is brewed under the supervision of the monks and that the majority of profits go to social causes.
The brand is famous for its diverse range, including Chimay Red, Blue, Triple, and the more recent Chimay Yellow (150). Every bottle is produced exclusively at the abbey's brewery using water drawn from the abbey's own wells. While the bottling process takes place at a nearby facility to maintain volume, the core manufacturing remains strictly tied to the monastic site.
Ownership of the brand remains entirely within the hands of the monastic community. Unlike many other heritage beer brands that have been acquired by multinational conglomerates, Chimay is owned by Bières de Chimay S.A., which is controlled by the Abbey of Scourmont. This ensures that the brand maintains its independence and its commitment to the original values of monastic industry and philanthropy.
