Alpro is a pioneering European brand specializing in plant-based food and drinks, founded in 1980 in Belgium by Philippe Vandemoortele. The brand was established with a focus on ethical food production long before plant-based diets became a mainstream trend. Its mission began with soy-based products and has since expanded significantly into oat, almond, coconut, and hazelnut categories.
Over the decades, Alpro underwent several ownership changes as the market for dairy alternatives grew. Originally part of the Vandemoortele Group, it was acquired by the American company WhiteWave Foods in 2009. In 2017, the global food giant Danone acquired WhiteWave, bringing Alpro under its umbrella. Today, Alpro is a cornerstone of Danone’s plant-based division, aligning with the company's 'One Planet. One Health' initiative.
Manufacturing takes place across several key European facilities. The brand’s primary and largest production site remains in Wevelgem, Belgium, which is one of the most advanced plant-based production facilities in the world. Additional manufacturing occurs in Issenheim, France, and Kettering, United Kingdom, allowing for efficient distribution across the UK and Continental Europe.
