Caran d'Ache is a world-renowned manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments, art supplies, and accessories. The brand was founded in Geneva in 1915, originally named the Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons. It was later renamed in 1924 by Arnold Schweitzer as a tribute to the celebrated French caricaturist Emmanuel Poiré, who worked under the pseudonym 'Caran d'Ache'—derived from the Russian word for pencil, 'karandash'.

Unlike many global brands that outsource production to lower-cost regions, Caran d'Ache remains deeply committed to its Swiss heritage. The company manufactures almost the entirety of its product range at its dedicated workshop in Thônex, Geneva. This local production ensures the 'Swiss Made' label remains a symbol of extreme precision and quality for their colored pencils, pens, and fine arts equipment.

The brand is a rare example of a long-standing independent family business in the luxury and stationery sector. Since its capitalization and expansion in the early 20th century, it has remained under the private ownership of the Meuron family, ensuring that its traditional craftsmanship and manufacturing standards are preserved without the pressure of public shareholder demands.
