Oatly is a pioneer in the plant-based milk market, known for its focus on oat-based products. The brand was founded in Sweden during the 1990s by Rickard Öste, a researcher at Lund University who discovered how to use enzymes to turn fiber-rich oats into a liquid milk alternative.
While the company remains deeply rooted in Sweden, its manufacturing has expanded globally to keep up with high demand. Oatly operates production facilities in several regions, including Landskrona in Sweden, Vlissingen in the Netherlands, and various sites in North America and Asia. The 'iMat' product shown is a specialized cooking cream designed for culinary use.
Ownership of Oatly changed significantly in recent years. While it was once an independent Swedish company, it is now a publicly traded entity listed on the NASDAQ since 2021. Major stakeholders include the venture firm Verlinvest and the China Resources group through a joint venture, though the company continues to maintain its operational headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.
