Liberté is a heritage dairy brand with deep roots in Montreal, Quebec. Originally established in 1936 by the Kander and Feldzamen families, it began as a small kosher dairy. Over the decades, the brand gained significant popularity for its high-quality yogurt products, eventually becoming a staple in the Canadian market and expanding internationally.
The manufacturing for products sold in North America is primarily concentrated in Canada, utilizing Canadian dairy to support local agricultural networks. While the brand has global reach, it maintains its reputation for artisanal-style production methods even after scaling to a commercial level.
In terms of ownership, the brand has undergone several transitions. Following a long period under General Mills, the Canadian operations and the Liberté brand rights in Canada were acquired by the French dairy giant Lactalis in 2021. Today, Liberté operates under the umbrella of Lactalis, the world's largest dairy products group, headquartered in Laval, France.
