Thermos is the global pioneer in vacuum insulation technology, a brand so influential that its name became a generic trademark for vacuum flasks in many parts of the world. The brand originated in Germany in 1904, based on the scientific vacuum flask invented by Sir James Dewar. It quickly expanded into international markets, establishing major manufacturing and sales operations in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Over the decades, ownership of the various international Thermos branches shifted. In 1989, the Japanese company Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (then known as Nippon Sanso K.K.), which had developed the world's first stainless steel vacuum flask, acquired the Thermos companies in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. This consolidated the brand under Japanese leadership. Today, the brand continues to lead the market in temperature-retention technology, producing a wide array of hydration bottles, food jars, and tumblers.
While the brand has deep European and American roots, its current technological and corporate direction is driven by its Japanese parent company. Manufacturing is strategically distributed, with high-volume production centered in East Asia to serve the global market while maintaining specialized facilities in other regions.
