While the brand maintains its Belgian identity and its logo featuring an elephant, its ownership has transitioned through several major global corporations. Originally an independent Belgian brand, it was acquired by Jacobs Suchard in the 1980s, which later became part of Kraft Foods. Today, Côte d'Or is one of the premium brands owned by Mondelēz International.
