The Body Shop is an iconic global beauty brand founded by Anita Roddick in Brighton, England, in 1976. Established with a revolutionary focus on ethical consumerism and cruelty-free products, it was one of the first major beauty companies to ban animal testing and champion fair trade through its 'Community Fair Trade' program. The brand quickly grew from a single shop into a massive international franchise known for its botanical-based skincare, hair care, and fragrances.

Historically, the brand has seen several high-profile changes in ownership. It was acquired by the French beauty conglomerate L'Oréal in 2006, then sold to the Brazilian group Natura & Co in 2017. Most recently, following financial restructuring in early 2024, the brand's ownership transitioned as various international divisions were sold or reorganized. As of late 2024 and heading into 2026, the brand is under the primary ownership of Auréa Group, an investment firm co-founded by Mike Jatania, which aims to revitalize the brand's heritage as a leader in ethical beauty.

While the brand's headquarters and heart remain in the UK, manufacturing has diversified over the decades. A significant portion of its production continues in the United Kingdom to maintain quality control and heritage, but various product lines and packaging components are sourced globally from sustainable partners to support its extensive retail network.
