Founded in 1883 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, by Hermann Thorens, the brand is one of the oldest names in the audio industry. Originally focused on musical movements and clockworks, Thorens transitioned into the production of high-fidelity phonographs and record players in the early 20th century. The brand gained legendary status with models like the TD 124, which remain highly sought after by audiophiles worldwide for their precision engineering.
Following various corporate restructures and periods of ownership, the brand underwent a significant rebirth in 2018 when it was acquired by Gunter Kürten, a veteran of the audio industry. Under this new leadership, the company headquarters were moved to Germany. Today, Thorens continues to design and manufacture premium turntables and tonearms, blending its historic Swiss engineering heritage with modern German precision and high-fidelity innovation.
