O'Neill is an iconic surf brand founded in San Francisco, California, in 1952 by Jack O'Neill. It is credited with inventing the first neoprene surf wetsuit, a revolutionary step that allowed surfers to stay in the cold waters of Northern California for longer periods. The brand quickly became a global pioneer in the surf industry, expanding into lifestyle apparel, footwear, and accessories.
Over the decades, the brand's ownership structure has evolved to manage its global presence. While the O'Neill family maintained certain rights, the brand's intellectual property and global distribution are largely managed through licensing and acquisitions. The apparel rights for the O'Neill brand in the United States and several other markets were acquired by the Logo 600 Group and later passed through various entities. Today, the brand's global rights are primarily controlled by O’Neill Group (based in the Netherlands) for the European and some international markets, while the La Jolla Group holds the license for the Americas. Manufacturing is outsourced to a global network of suppliers, primarily in Southeast Asia and Europe.
