Ibis is a high-level data analysis framework designed to bridge the gap between Python and various SQL databases and big data engines. It was originally created by Wes McKinney, the founder of pandas, while he was at Cloudera. The project was developed to provide a standard, portable way for data scientists to write analytical code that can run across different execution environments without being rewritten. Unlike physical consumer products, Ibis is a digital tool maintained by the global open-source community.
The framework became an independent open-source project and is currently part of the Voltron Data portfolio. Voltron Data is a company focused on building modular data systems and hardware-accelerated computing. Under Voltron Data's leadership, Ibis has expanded its support to dozens of backends, including DuckDB, BigQuery, Snowflake, and Postgres. Because it is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, its 'production' happens on servers across the globe by contributors from diverse technological backgrounds.
