SwiftKey was originally developed by TouchType Ltd, a British technology company founded in 2008 by Jon Reynolds and Ben Medlock. The brand achieved global recognition for its predictive text technology, which utilized artificial intelligence to learn a user's writing style and predict upcoming words across multiple languages. Its innovative 'SwiftKey Flow' gesture typing and machine learning capabilities made it one of the most popular third-party keyboard apps on Android and iOS.

In 2016, the brand was acquired by Microsoft in a major strategic move to integrate advanced natural language processing and AI into its mobile ecosystem. Since the acquisition, SwiftKey has been rebranded as 'Microsoft SwiftKey' and has seen deep integration with Microsoft's broader AI initiatives, including the inclusion of Bing AI (powered by OpenAI's GPT models).
