Osram is a prestigious German brand with a history dating back to 1919 when it was founded by the merger of the lighting businesses of Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske, and Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG). The name is derived from 'osmium' and 'wolfram' (tungsten), the two materials commonly used for lamp filaments at the time.

Over the years, the brand has undergone significant structural changes. While it was once a wholly-owned subsidiary of Siemens, it was spun off in 2013. In 2020, the Austrian sensor and semiconductor specialist ams AG successfully acquired the company, leading to the formation of ams OSRAM.
