Philadelphia is one of the world's most recognized brand names for cream cheese. Despite its name, the product was actually invented in New York in 1872 by William Lawrence. It was named 'Philadelphia' because, at the time, the city of Philadelphia was known for high-quality dairy production. The brand was later acquired by the Phenix Cheese Company, which merged with Kraft in 1928.

Today, the brand ownership is split due to the 2012 corporate spin-off of Kraft Foods. In the European market, Philadelphia is owned and produced by Mondelēz International. Products sold in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) are primarily manufactured at the Mondelēz plant in Fallingbostel, Germany. The company continues to dominate the spreadable cheese market with various flavored editions like this goat cheese and rosemary variety.
