Edmonds is an iconic New Zealand culinary brand, best known for its 'Sure to Rise' baking powder and the legendary Edmonds Cookery Book. Founded in 1879 by Thomas Edmonds in Christchurch, the brand began as a small business focused on creating a reliable baking powder that would effectively rise despite the quality of flour available at the time. Over the next century, Edmonds became a staple in Antipodean households, expanding its range into custard powders, cake mixes, and other pantry essentials.
While the brand maintains a deep historical connection to New Zealand, its ownership has transitioned through several major corporate mergers. Today, Edmonds is owned by Goodman Fielder, a major food company serving the Australia and New Zealand markets. In 2015, Goodman Fielder was acquired by a joint venture between Wilmar International and First Pacific, bringing the brand under the ultimate control of large multinational conglomerates based in Singapore and Hong Kong. Despite these corporate changes, Edmonds products continue to be manufactured primarily in New Zealand to serve its loyal domestic base.
