Lipitor is one of the most widely recognized pharmaceutical brands in the world, containing the active ingredient atorvastatin. It was originally discovered by Bruce Roth in 1985 while working at Parke-Davis, which was a subsidiary of Warner-Lambert. The drug gained global prominence after its FDA approval in late 1996 and was subsequently marketed through a co-promotion agreement between Warner-Lambert and Pfizer.
In 2000, Pfizer acquired Warner-Lambert, taking full control of the Lipitor brand. For many years, it was Pfizer's flagship product and the best-selling pharmaceutical in history. Following the expiration of its patents, Pfizer shifted its off-patent and legacy brand portfolio into a new division called Upjohn. In November 2020, Upjohn merged with Mylan to form Viatris, which is now the primary company responsible for the brand’s distribution and marketing in many global regions.
Manufacturing for Lipitor occurs in multiple locations internationally. Key production facilities have historically included sites in Ireland (specifically Ringaskiddy and Little Island) and Germany (Freiburg), alongside various other sites across the United States and Puerto Rico to meet global demand.
