Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Biscuit

Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Biscuits are a cultural icon of Scotland, recognized by their distinctive red and gold diagonal-striped foil packaging. Each biscuit consists of five layers of thin wafer separated by four layers of chewy caramel, all enrobed in milk chocolate. They have been produced at the same site in Uddingston, near Glasgow, since their introduction in 1952.

The brand has a rich history dating back to 1890 when Thomas Tunnock purchased a bakery in Uddingston. While the company originally focused on fresh baked goods, the Caramel Wafer was developed by Archie Tunnock in the 1950s as a response to post-war rationing, providing a treat with a longer shelf life than traditional cakes. Today, the company remains a fiercely independent family business, led by Boyd Tunnock, the founder's grandson.

Manufacturing continues to take place exclusively at the Tunnock's factory in Uddingston, where millions of biscuits are produced weekly for both the UK market and international export. The brand maintains a strong presence in the Middle East and other global markets, famously appearing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony as a symbol of Scottish identity.
