Tony's Chocolonely is a Dutch chocolate brand founded in 2005 by investigative journalist Teun van de Keuken (Tony). The brand was established with the mission to end modern slavery and illegal child labor in the cocoa industry, following his discovery of these unethical practices during his work on the television program Keuringsdienst van Waarde. The brand is famous for its unequally divided chocolate bars, which represent the unfair distribution of profits in the cocoa supply chain.
While the brand is headquartered in Amsterdam and was originally created in the Netherlands, its chocolate is primarily manufactured in Belgium at a dedicated production line in the Alprose factory or through other partners like Barry Callebaut, ensuring fair trade practices. Since its inception, the company has expanded globally, maintaining a strong commitment to its five sourcing principles which include traceability and paying a higher price to farmers.
The brand is currently owned by Tony's Chocolonely Investments, which includes a majority stake held by Verlinvest, a Belgian investment firm. Despite outside investment, the company operates as a ‘social enterprise’ and maintains a strict mission-driven corporate structure intended to protect its impact goals well into the future.
