Fray Bentos is an iconic brand deeply rooted in British food culture, despite its origins being tied to the Uruguayan port town of the same name. Founded in 1881 by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company (Lemco), the brand originally specialised in beef extract and corned beef. Over the decades, it became synonymous with convenience and quality canned meats, eventually introducing its famous line of tinned pies with puff pastry lids in the mid-20th century.
Today, the brand's production is firmly centered in the United Kingdom. Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major food conglomerates over the years, including Brooke Bond and Campbell's. Since 2011, Fray Bentos has been owned by Baxters Food Group, a family-owned Scottish company. The pies are manufactured at the Baxters facility in Fochabers, Scotland, ensuring the brand remains a staple of British pantry shelves.
